SUMMARY:Dinner Plate Dahlia Workshop 6 Classes
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Quiltworx.com designed its fifth “Technique of the Month” pattern. The Dinner Plate Dahlia quilt brings together a wide-range of techniques for Foundation Paper Piecing\, leaving students with the ability to move on to many other Quiltworx patterns once they have completed this design. Because of Judy’s dedication to teaching\, she has also gone through the steps to provide training for our  Certified Instructors so they can provide training to their students as a  weekly program that includes consecutive workshops ranging from 6 to 8 classes\, depending on the class structure. These classes will helpyou understand the process and steps needed to complete the pattern. \nThe Dinner Plate Dahlia includes many of Judy’s techniques for paper piecing\, including cutting\, stacking\, chain piecing\, curved paper-piecing\, smart corners\, the use of Transition and Registration Point (TRP) Lines\, and our newest technique\, curved strip piecing. \nJoin Certified Instructor Nancy Strath as she teaches this pattern in  a slower pace\, 6 workshops over 4 months.  Every class you will start a new booklet learning new techniques every class.\, and as you complete them you will  join to the next unit\, with the goal of putting at least one section together over the program  . \nWorkshop dates:  \nThursday August 29\, 2019  10:00am – 5:00 pm    Booklet 2 (Booklet 1 is introduction and general information) \nThursday September 19\, 2019 10:00am – 5:00 pm  Booklet  3 \nThursday October 3\, 2019\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm  Booklet 4 \nThursday October 17\, 2019\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Booklet 5 \nThursday November 7\, 2019\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Booklet 6 \nThursday December 12\, 2019\, 10:00am – 5:00 pm Assembly and catch up \nWorkshop  Cost :  $75/class or $400 total prepaid for all classes  \nPattern Cost: \nWall size (80″x80″)  $135 \n Queen size (100″ x 100″)  $170” \nThe pattern is broken down into 6 separate booklets Nancy will demonstrate how to prepare\, organize and cut your fabrics\, papers and templates\, at every class. SUMMARY:MJ Kinman Bite Sized Gem Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create a Small Faceted Quilt\nIn this fast-paced workshop\, participants will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light using the same single-foundation piecing techniques I use to create my own “diamond quilts”.  Participants will choose from one of several pre-selected abstract gem designs based on their skill level. They will then learn how to chart the design onto freezer paper; code each piece for color\, location\, and adjacency; position template pieces onto fabric to achieve the desired light effects; and ultimately create their own unique study in faceted color. Participants will leave the class with a small top that can later be hand- or machine-quilted at home. \nDate: Thursday\, February 14\, 2019\nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 PM with one-hour lunch break\nLocation: Bow Bench Retreat\nClass Fee: $75\, does not include lunch or supplies \nSupply List \n\n\n36 inch length of freezer paper (standard 18” width); parchment paper or tracing paper will not work with this technique \n\n\nColored pencils in the colors of the gem they want to create. However\, don’t limit yourself! You may want to make a gemstone reflecting a wide variety of hues and values. \n\n\nErasable pencils \n\n\nBall point pen in blue or black \n\n\nEraser (preferably a gum eraser\, rather than using the top of the pencil. These remove marks much better.) \n\n\n18” ruler \n\n\nSmall ruler with a ¼” measurement \n\n\nBic Wite Out Correction Tape (available at any office supply store) \n\n\nDomestic sewing machine and thread assortment (neutrals or colors that match your fabrics) \n\n\nScissors and rotary cutting tools (cutter and mat) \n\n\nIron and ironing pad (or board) \n\n\nFabric — Assortment of skinny 8ths (half of a fat quarter) of cotton fabric in white\, black\, and up to four values of at least three different colors.  Participants to supply their own fabric for the class. The fabrics best suited to this project are commercially-produced fabrics that are either solid OR feature color gradients; And be sure to bring white and black fabric to add sparkle to the piece.

SUMMARY:MJ Kinman Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:I like to tell people I make the biggest diamonds in the world. The adventure started 22 years ago when an image of a gorgeous gem captured my imagination. As a new quiltmaker\, I was unsure how to transform that image into a quilt\, but knew there had to be a way. I began searching for the right techniques and\, seven years later\, made my first gem. \nMy latest series\, entitled “Bourbon Diamonds” celebrates Kentucky’s favorite spirit. My current series is based on the National Gem Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. \nMy work has been exhibited in galleries\, museums\, and national competitions. The National Quilt Museum (Paducah\, KY) is planning an exhibit of my work in 2020. My gems have been featured in print and online publications such as Quilting Arts Magazine\, France Patchwork\, McCall’s Quilting\, Make Modern Magazine\, and Online Quilting Magazine. I have appeared on Quilting Arts TV and recently taped segments for TheQuiltShow.com with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims. My gems are included in private and corporate collections\, including Maker’s Mark Distillery. \nWebsite: www.MJKinman.com\nFacebook: www.Facebook.com/mjkinmantextileartist\nInstagram: www.Instagram.com/mjkinman709 \n \n  \nTrunk Show & Presentation\nDiamond Divas & Drama Queens: Colored Gemstones as Design Inspiration \nDate:  Wednesday\, February 13\, 2019\nTime:  7:00 PM\nLocation:  Bow Bench Retreat\nTickets:  $10 \nThe most beautiful gemstone captures light and reflects it back to us with unique brilliance\, revealing its fiery personality. These are the divas and the drama queens of the gem world. Every one of them has a story to tell…just like people. This slide lecture and trunk show chronicle my story – my 20-year adventure in learning how to create the biggest diamonds in the world in cloth. \nDuring my presentation\, I’ll discuss how I select gems that qualify as “divas and drama queens” and what they teach us about how to add sparkle to any art quilt. I’ll display the actual art quilts inspired by some of these divas. I’ll talk about the techniques to create and assemble the hundreds of pieces in each diamond\, materials I use to create the wash of color and light across a gem’s surface\, and the quilting techniques that enhance a gem’s facets. And\, as so often happens with any artist’s decades-long journey\, I’ll share what I’ve learned from my leap from the Corporate Life and into the Creative Life.
