SUMMARY:"Slab" Quilts with Cheryl Arkison - Quilts for Everyday Heroes
DESCRIPTION:This is a focused workshop on the Slab Technique from Sunday Morning Quilts\, co-authored with Amanda Jean Nyberg. Slabs are what refer to as the “fabric” made from joining scraps together. It is an improvisational piecing technique that results in unique slabs of fabric that can be used in many ways. The class includes scrap sorting discussions and play as well as detailed instructions on making a slab. Students will then work to make additional slabs\, practicing the technique. \nDuring this class we will be making quilt blocks to donate to an organization called Quilts for Everyday Heroes   https://www.quilts4everydayheroes.com/ \nQuilts for Everyday Heroes is an organization that appreciates and recognizes first responders for putting themselves into emotionally challenging and dangerous situations daily.  We hope  to wrap those first responders who are battling with PTSD and depression in a handmade quilt to let them know that we are aware of the struggle that comes from their determination to make our world a safe place. \nThe “Slab” technique by Cheryl Arkison is a great block for charity quilts\, so this is a great opportunity to learn a new technique\, spend the day sewing with friends\, use up some scraps while you support a amazing cause!! There is a fridge and microwave in every room as well\, the hotel does not allow us to have meals brought into the workshop\, snacks at your own work station are okay but no pot luck style meals due to Alberta Health Board rules. \n\n\nComplimentary Hot Breakfast buffet with room \n\n\nIndoor Pool \n\n\nCasino \n\n\nThe Workshop space will closed and locked overnight\, but is available for anyone who would like to sew early in the morning or late into the night. Nancy  will be teaching between 9 – 5\, and will be available in the evenings if you have questions. \nThe Workshop fee is $300 + GST\, a $75 non refundable deposit is due at registration\, the balance is due March 15\, 2020. The work shop fee does not include a pattern or any fabric\, or accommodation and food.

The Dinner Plate Dahlia quilt brings together a wide-range of techniques for Foundation Paper Piecing\, leaving students with the ability to move on to many other Quiltworx patterns once they have completed this design. DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 2018\, Quiltworx.com designed its fifth “Technique of the Month” pattern. The Dinner Plate Dahlia quilt brings together a wide-range of techniques for Foundation Paper Piecing\, leaving students with the ability to move on to many other Quiltworx patterns once they have completed this design. Because of Judy’s dedication to teaching\, she has also gone through the steps to provide training for our  Certified Instructors so they can provide training to their students and customers as a monthly or weekly program that includes consecutive workshops ranging from 6 to 8 classes\, depending on the class structure. These classes will help you understand the process and steps needed to complete the pattern. \nThe Dinner Plate Dahlia includes many of Judy’s techniques for paper piecing\, including cutting\, stacking\, chain piecing\, curved paper-piecing\, smart corners\, the use of Transition and Registration Point (TRP) Lines\, and our newest technique\, curved strip piecing. \nJoin Certified Instructor Nancy Strath as she teaches this pattern in a fast paced retreat style setting over 5 days.  Every day you will learn a new unit and as you complete them learn to join to the next unit\, with the goal of putting one section together over the week\, so you can complete the quilt at home.  The pace of this class will require you to have everything pre cut and organized prior to the first class\, there will not be time for cutting fabrics or papers during class.  Several organization classes will be offered prior to the retreat if you would like Nancy’s assistance with this. \nIf the fast pace of a retreat format is not appealing to you\, Nancy will be offering this as individual classes  every two weeks starting in September\, \nNancy will teach daily from 9:00am – 5pm\, you are welcome to arrive early and stay later to sew into the evenings. \nBow Bench Retreat does not have overnight accommodations\, however you are welcome to bring your RV\, trailer\, motorhome and stay on sight\, this would be dry camping\, there are no hook ups\, the retreat center has a bathroom with shower and a full kitchen for your use. Some of the her workshops have been on Machine Quilting with focus on free-motion quilting\, specializing in feather and filler designs\, and New York Beauties Blocks quilts. Ana’s present focus is on Art Quilting\, incorporating different elements of surface design\, such as fabric painting\, mono-printing\, screen printing and hand-dyeing. \nAna is a frequent contributor to Quilting Arts Magazine and Quilting Arts TV. Her work has also appeared in the American Quilter’s Society Magazine\, in A Needle Pulling Thread\, and in Modern Patchwork\, as well as in 101 Patchwork Projects and Quilts and Quilt Scene. DESCRIPTION:T-Shirt Quilt Class \nDate: Tuesday May 21\, June 4\, June 11 \nTime:  6:00 pm – 9:00 pm  \nLocation:  Bow Bench Retreat \nCost:  $75 for 3 classes \nA T-shirt quilt is a unique way to turn memories into a keepsake to be used and treasured.  In this 3 class series  you will learn the techniques to make a T- shirt Quilt\, including choosing t-shirts\, planning the layout\, finding supplies\, stabilizing your t-shirts and of course how to sew them together.  \nThis class is suitable for beginners making their first quilt\, the only requirement is that you know how to run a sewing machine.  \nBring your box of t-shirts to the first class and we will sort through them and start planning.  \nBook\, tools\, notions\, and interfacing will be available to purchase at the first class\, after the initial planning class you may want to purchase additional fabrics to use as sashing in between your blocks\, depending on the layout you choose\, but it is not necessary to do this prior to the first class.  \nMaterials and Supplies: \n\n T- Shirts :  the number of t shirts will depend on the layout and design you choose\, so bring all you have to the first class and we will go from there.\n Fusible interfacing :  fusible woven interfacing for back of t-shirts to give stability to tricky knit fabric\, so your T-shirts won’t stretch or pucker as you sew them together.  This is available to purchase at Bow Bench\, the amount will depend on how many t- shirts you use.\nSewing machine in good working order\, basic sewing kit\, including thread\, needles\, scissors\, (you will not need this for the first class we will only cut and plan at this class)\nRotary cutter & Rulers\, its much easier to cut your t-shirts and measure using a rotary cutter and ruler\, if you don’t have one they are available to use at Bow Bench Retreat \nPattern Book $33\, available to purchase at Bow Bench (optional depending on the layout you choose)

We will be using strips of fabric and batting to create a long strand that will be coiled together to form a round or oval shape when completed. We will work with top stitching the long strip then zig zagging our strips together\, keeping it flat. DESCRIPTION:Create a Small Faceted Quilt\nIn this fast-paced workshop\, participants will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light using the same single-foundation piecing techniques I use to create my own “diamond quilts”.  Participants will choose from one of several pre-selected abstract gem designs based on their skill level. They will then learn how to chart the design onto freezer paper; code each piece for color\, location\, and adjacency; position template pieces onto fabric to achieve the desired light effects; and ultimately create their own unique study in faceted color. Participants will leave the class with a small top that can later be hand- or machine-quilted at home. \nDate: Thursday\, February 14\, 2019\nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 PM with one-hour lunch break\nLocation: Bow Bench Retreat\nClass Fee: $75\, does not include lunch or supplies \n​Supply List \n\n\n36 inch length of freezer paper (standard 18” width); parchment paper or tracing paper will not work with this technique \n\n\nColored pencils in the colors of the gem they want to create. However\, don’t limit yourself! You may want to make a gemstone reflecting a wide variety of hues and values. \n\n\nErasable pencils \n\n\nBall point pen in blue or black \n\n\nEraser (preferably a gum eraser\, rather than using the top of the pencil. These remove marks much better.) \n\n\n18” ruler \n\n\nSmall ruler with a ¼” measurement \n\n\nBic Wite Out Correction Tape (available at any office supply store) \n\n\nDomestic sewing machine and thread assortment (neutrals or colors that match your fabrics) \n\n\nScissors and rotary cutting tools (cutter and mat) \n\n\nIron and ironing pad (or board) \n\n\nFabric — Assortment of skinny 8ths (half of a fat quarter) of cotton fabric in white\, black\, and up to four values of at least three different colors.  Participants to supply their own fabric for the class.
