SUMMARY:"Slab" Quilts with Cheryl Arkison - Quilts for Everyday Heroes
DESCRIPTION:This is a focused workshop on the Slab Technique from Sunday Morning Quilts\, co-authored with Amanda Jean Nyberg. Slabs are what refer to as the “fabric” made from joining scraps together. It is an improvisational piecing technique that results in unique slabs of fabric that can be used in many ways. The class includes scrap sorting discussions and play as well as detailed instructions on making a slab. Students will then work to make additional slabs\, practicing the technique. \nDuring this class we will be making quilt blocks to donate to an organization called Quilts for Everyday Heroes   https://www.quilts4everydayheroes.com/ \nQuilts for Everyday Heroes is an organization that appreciates and recognizes first responders for putting themselves into emotionally challenging and dangerous situations daily.  We hope  to wrap those first responders who are battling with PTSD and depression in a handmade quilt to let them know that we are aware of the struggle that comes from their determination to make our world a safe place. \nThe “Slab” technique by Cheryl Arkison is a great block for charity quilts\, so this is a great opportunity to learn a new technique\, spend the day sewing with friends\, use up some scraps while you support a amazing cause!! Please feel free to continue to make blocks at home to donate.  Quilts 4 Everyday Heros would also appreciate fabric for backing and people to longarm finished tops. More information will be provided during class. \nClass fee: $50 (to cover instructor fees\, profits to be donated to Quilts for Everyday Heroes) \nDate:  Monday\, April 20\, 2020  10am – 4pm \nSupplies: \nPlease bring a variety of gender neutral fabrics (scraps are perfect) \nSewing Machine \nBasic sewings supplies (pins\, scissors thread etc) \nLunch

The Resort is also just a short distance to the towns of Canmore and Banff. \n                                                     \n\n\nIncluded in workshop \n\n\nBeautiful\, relaxing setting at the “Basecamp of the Rockies” \n\n\n4 full days of instruction\,   free sewing time before and after class into the evenings (optional) \n\n\nBeautiful conference room for the workshop\, participants will all have their own 5 foot table. \n\n\nCutting and ironing stations set up throughout the room \n\n\nDoor prizes \n\n\nFree high speed wifi \n\n\nPatterns\, kits and tools and notions available to purchase during the workshop \n\nBeaver Creek Mercantile\, a quilt shop from Caroline\, Alberta  will be setting up a “Pop up Store”\n\nShow and Tell trunk Show ​ \n\n\nNot included with the workshop fee but available at the resort \n\n\nAccommodation rates and reservations booked directly through the resort\,  one king bed\, or 2 queen beds\, featuring comfortable duvets\, plush pillows in spacious rooms showcasing either Mountain views or sunrise views. There is a fridge and microwave in every room as well\, the hotel does not allow us to have meals brought into the workshop\, snacks at your own work station are okay but no pot luck style meals due to Alberta Health Board rules. \n\n\nComplimentary Hot Breakfast buffet with room \n\n\nIndoor Pool \n\n\nCasino \n\n\nThe Workshop space will closed and locked overnight\, but is available for anyone who would like to sew early in the morning or late into the night.
